How to use Essential Oils

Adding the use of essential oils to your life can enhance your well-being enormously. As Rene Gattefosse (the father of aromatherapy) said “today, essential oils gratify our sense of smell. We use them for pleasure and unwittingly for our health. We now need to learn to understand them better and make better use of them”

I would like to help you use these powerful oils in your life. The instructions given here are for healthy adults. In the Bath
Having a regular aromatherapy bath is one of the best things you can do to enhance your health. The essential oils are quickly and easily absorbed into the blood stream and the effects lasts for hours and sometimes for days!

How to do it:
  • The maximum number of drops of essential oils needed for an adult is 10 drops in total. If using essential oils on children and babies refer to our safety page.
  • Mix your chosen essential oils in tablespoon of vegetable oil such as grapeseed oil or olive oil. You can even use full fat milk, but never mineral oil as this is a barrier and prevents essential oils being absorbed into the body.
  • Fill the bath to desired depth and temperature
  • Just before you get into the bath add the essential oil mix to the bath water and stir
  • Or
  • Just before you get in rub the mixture onto your body and get in to the bath.
  • Relax for at least 10 minutes
  • Make sure to rinse out the bath when you are finished as it may be slippy – use neat shampoo on a damp face cloth.
My favourite night time blend is
  • 4 drops of Lavender
  • 3 drops of Vetiver
  • 3 drops of Sweet orange

Vaporizer in an essential oil burner

Adding the therapeutic aroma and vapour of essential oils to your home is a lovely way to encourage relaxation and to “decompress” after a busy day.
  • Add 10 drops of your chosen oil/oils to a burner,
  • Fill with boiling water
  • Light candle and enjoy!
One of my favourite daytime blends is
  • 3 Drops of Eucalyptus
  • 4 Drops of Lavender
  • 3 Drops of Lemongrass
Steam inhalation
Steam inhalation is wonderful to help relieve sinus congestion, ease a sore throat or a headache.
  • Fill a bowl with boiling water
  • Add 2-3 drops of essential oils
  • Put a towel over your head
  • Close your eyes and inhale through the nose and mouth for 10 minutes
  • It is important to close your eyes as the hot steam can irritate the eyes
  • Make sure children are supervised at all times
  • For steam inhalation - less essential oils is definitely best!
A good mix for sinus congestion is
  • 2 Drops of Eucalyptus
  • 1 Drops of Lavendin or Lavender
Make your own body oil
  • Vegetable oils can be very softening to the skin and if you use organic oils it is luxury for your skin and body.
  • For a healthy blend that nourishes the skin and enhances well being just add 3 drops of essential oils to every 10ml of vegetable oils you use. (for facial quantities see below)
  • So add 15 drops of essential oils to 50mls of grape seed oil
  • Mix well an then apply to skin
My favorite blend when my skin is feeling dry is
  • 50ml of Coconut oil
  • 5 drops Lavender
  • 5 drops Frankincense
  • 5 drops Sweet Orange
Make your own Face Oil
  • Add 1 drop of essential oils to 10mls of vegetable oil.
  • That is, 5drops of essential oil to 50mls of grape seed oil
  • Mix well an then apply to skin
A good facial blend is
  • 50mls Jojoba oil
  • 3 drops Lavender
  • 2 drops Patchouli

Inhalers
Essential oils inhalers are a very quick and easy way to use essential oils to relieve a headache or sinus congestion. They are also wonderful to help relieve stress or enhance your mood if feeling low.
Add 15-20 drops of essential oils to the wick and use as required
A good blend to use if you are feeling emotional or stressed is:
  • 10 drops Sweet Marjoram
  • 5 drops Lavender
  • 5 drops Bergamot
Or
20 Drops of the one of the OBUS blends such as
  • Obus Emotional Well-being Blend
  • Obus De-stress blend
Quickies
  • To have a nice smell in a room – put 4 drops of essential oil on a tissue and put tissue down behind a warm radiator.
  • Put 2 drops of lavender on a tissue and put in bra – this will keep you calm all day
  • Put 3 drops of peppermint or ginger oil on a tissue and have in car to prevent travel sickness.
